We each have a small part of ourselves we’re willing to show the world. We protect it, but all the while we search for the missing half to that piece. At times, we think we’re here all alone, just waiting for something that doesn’t exist. But then, by chance, luck, or fate…we find our missing piece. And we realize…we’re not alone.

AJ Rafael & Colleen Ballinger - Marry You (cover)
so this song has been through a lot. this is the first ever draft of the song, recorded literally a minute after i had finished it. it’s a bit different.
i first had to inspiration to write this song because of my friend who sent me a message after i asked her how she was doing.. in the message she had the words “bucket full of tears” describing her situation. thus, the first line of the song was born and the rest seemed to come to me in ease because of the situation i was in. yes it is about missing somebody so bad you can’t go another day without them. and yes it’s about becoming a better person for them because of any mistakes you may have made in the past.
this was one of those rare song-writing experiences in which the lyrics and melody of the whole song was done in less than an hour. i remember my iMac was in the living room and not in the computer room because i wanted to be close to my actual grand piano. jasmine was there doing work in the other room and she heard the whole process. our friend kunaal came over and i showed him and he was like “nice man it sounds like backstreet boys or something!” i was like “yee nice man!” haha. when i first wrote it it was a slow jam/ballad to me, and we were thinking of songs to put on my album so i immediately ruled it out for myself because we didn’t have enough upbeat songs for the cd.
i then thought of my friends AHMIR and how they had asked me back in the day when i lived in Boston to write something for/with them. so i posted on facebook that i had written a song and would like AHMIR to use it maybe for their upcoming album. i asked for 500 likes, posted it on YouTube and had people watch it and tweet it to them. they loved it, but tweeted back to me saying “thumbs up from AHMIR, but our album is far down the line right now”. Jesse Barrera texted me the moment it went out on YouTube saying “b*tch you better keep that song it’s going on your record”. lol.
this became the anthem of mine for a couple of months because during this time (November-ish) i was feeling as alone as ever. i had just went through a break-up and nothing was going right for me. i had my friends and family of course, but i’m sure all of you know that feeling..
but as i said in the description of the music video, this song spoke differently to my Ate Rhea, (her husband was my Godfather “Kuya” Frank who had died not long before i wrote the song). she said it was as if he was singing it to her, telling her he’s fighting to be with her, and to hold on. and immediately this song became much deeper to me.
it’s amazing how powerful music is. i didn’t have the intent of having this song be about someone who has passed away. but it spoke to someone that way. and now with the music video it has spoken to thousands of people who have been through and are going through the same thing.
this is honestly the song i am most proud of… going through what it’s been through— evolving from a simple love song to an anthem for people going through something that isn’t easy, like a terminal illness or disease. i hope my music continues to speak to you all… that’s why i write music. to make you feel something. not just to put it up on iTunes hoping to make some kind of a profit. not to see how many views i get in an hour, because i know that i’ve done that sometimes before. it is about the MUSIC and it always has been for me. my dad played music for the music, and he did it to thank God for the talent He gave him. he played at different churches with different denominations because one thing was a common denominator— MUSIC. and he loved doing it. which is why i’ll continue to love doing this and to share with you all the talents that i’ve been blessed with.
love you all.
AJ
so inspiring <3
